Frequently Asked Questions

  • CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed) is a nationally recognized certification awarded by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). It requires passing a rigorous exam on learning theory, behavior, ethics, and humane training practices, along with ongoing continuing education.

Because dog training is not a regulated industry, most trainers operate without any formal certification and without one cannot legally call themselves Certified Professional Dog Trainers. Holding a CPDT-KA demonstrates a voluntary commitment to evidence-based, force-free training and high professional standards.

  • Force-free training means teaching dogs without fear, pain, or intimidation. I do not use aversive tools or techniques such as shock, prong, or choke collars, leash corrections, or methods designed to scare a dog into compliance. Instead, I focus on positive reinforcement and understanding the why behind behavior, helping dogs learn through trust, confidence, and clear communication — not fear.

  • In compliance with the ethical and safety guidelines of the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), I use force-free, LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) methods with a strong focus on positive reinforcement. That means we teach skills by building trust, motivation, and understanding — not fear or force. Just because you can make a dog comply doesn’t mean you should. I want your dog to choose good behavior because they feel safe, confident, and understood.

  • Yes. Supporting anxious, fearful, and reactive dogs is a big part of what I do. These dogs aren’t “bad” — they’re communicating discomfort, stress, or fear. We focus on understanding the why behind the behavior and creating a plan that helps your dog feel safe and confident in their world.

  • Yes, and I highly recommend it. A pre-puppy consultation helps you start off on the right foot. We’ll cover what to buy, how to set up your home, potty schedules, crate training, and what really matters during those first few weeks. It’s one of the best ways to reduce stress and overwhelm.

  • We start where your dog is most comfortable — usually in your home — and then expand into the real world. Training happens on walks, in parks, at dog-friendly stores, and in everyday environments. A dog who listens only at home isn’t truly trained — we focus on real-life skills that work everywhere.

  • Yes! Virtual training is a great option for families outside San Diego or for behavior coaching, puppy guidance, and management plans. You’ll still get personalized support, clear steps, and expert guidance — just without the travel.

  • Every dog is different. Some families need just a few sessions to feel confident, while others benefit from longer-term support. During your free consultation, we’ll talk through your goals and I’ll recommend a package that best supports both you and your dog.

  • I offer both. Single sessions are great for tune-ups or quick guidance, while packages provide the consistency needed for lasting change. Most families see the best results with packages because training is a process, not a one-time event.

  • Not at all. Training is about communication, confidence, and helping your dog navigate their world. Of course we teach skills like sit, stay, recall, and leash walking — but more importantly, we focus on emotional health, trust, and real-life decision-making.

  • Yes — and you’re not alone. Dogs don’t automatically generalize behaviors to new environments. We intentionally train in different locations so your dog learns how to listen everywhere, not just in your living room.

  • I’m certified, force-free, and deeply invested in understanding why behavior happens — not just how to stop it. Dog training isn’t regulated, and I chose to pursue nationally recognized certification because your dog deserves knowledgeable, ethical care. I train dogs, but I also train humans — because when you understand your dog, everything changes.

  • I can’t ethically guarantee specific outcomes because dogs are living, emotional beings — not robots. What I can guarantee is thoughtful, evidence-based training, clear communication, and full support throughout the process. I can also guarantee that your dog will be better off with training than without.
